King Street never ceases to amaze me. Everyday it seems to change and evolve. So, a few months ago when I came back from winter break, I was on my way to shop at C-Wonder and was not surprised to find that the store had completely shut down. However, noticing the sign that said “Bevello: Coming Soon!”, I anticipated the opening of a brand new boutique that could help me empty out my already desolate wallet.

Last week, I was passing by – expecting to see the empty store – and was intrigued by the stunning maxi dresses on display in the now open boutique. Upon entering, I was drawn to the racks full of endless pastel-colored clothes ranging from spring dresses to ripped jeans and leather purses. Seeing recognizable brands like Kate Spade, French Connection, House of Harlow and BCBG Max Azria, I felt like this place would become my new favorite store – and my bank account’s demise.

As I continued to peruse through the super cute clothing, I ran into freshman Ashley Bass, who was carrying a pile of jeans, chiffon tops and beautiful jewelry. “I love this place,” said Bass, “I’ve been to the one in Charlotte, but I like this one a lot more.” She said the clothes seemed high quality and though the prices were very high, the style factor was worth the spending. “I really miss C-Wonder,” she said “Half of my wardrobe comes from there, but now I’ll be shopping at bevello to replace it.”

Clearly, CofC students are falling in love with the new boutique – and so am I.

Having quickly developed an obsession with the adorable store, I sat down with store manager, Melissa Flaherty, to ask her a few questions. “Bevello is about making women feel beautiful inside and out,” said Flaherty. “It’s amazing working with clients. We don’t treat them like customers – we treat them like friends.” She said working at bevello is an amazing experience and she loves the philosophy the store promotes: their motto is “love your life, love your friends, love your clothes.” The company originates in North Carolina, proving the store has authentic southern charm.

Flaherty said that the main ideology of the store is that they are not workers – they are stylists. “When clients come in,” she said, “we pull things that we think will look good on them and then we stay with them one-on-one and tell them what to pair with it such as hair, shoes and accessories.” With the wide range of items in the store, a shopper can find a complete and beautiful outfit all in one place.

The name “bevello” is created from the Italian word “bella,” which means beautiful, mixed with the word “love”. The logo for the store is “bve”, meant to be read as an abbreviation for bevello – as well as to look like the word “love”. The creativity of the name is mirrored by the creative style of the beautiful clothing they sell. Bevello will definitely be a success on King Street, and us Charlestonians are happy to welcome the boutique to our wonderful array of shops that we all love to browse. Welcome to Charleston, bevello!
