The College of Charleston opened CAA softball play with 6-5 victory against Elon on Saturday afternoon in game one of a doubleheader.

Charleston wasted no time taking the lead, scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning. After leadoff batter Taylor DuPree walked, Mackenzie Maples launched a 3-2 pitch over the right field wall giving the Cougars a 2-0 lead.

Elon started the top of the second quickly with two doubles that would tie the game at two a piece.  Starting pitcher Hope Klicker got herself into a bases loaded jam and Elon would hit another double to take the 4-2 lead. Elon would add another run on a sacrifice fly to lead 5-2 in the top of the second.

With a couple of clutch at bats in the bottom of the second, the Cougars were in a position to take the lead. However, the Cougars were only able to muster one run from a ground out RBI from Maples to close the Phoenix lead to 5-3.

The Cougars had some clutch hitting in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff walk from Allison Pedigo and Victoria Bratcher reached on an error, Maples came up big again with a RBI double, her fourth RBI of the game, to trail 5-4. Rebecca Muller followed with a RBI single to tie the game.

With runners on first and third, Muller executed a delayed steal to distract the Phoenix and bring in another run to take the lead, which ultimately decied the game.

Samantha Martin picked up where Klicker left off, dominating an inning and a half to steal the deal for the Cougars.
