The College of Charleston (24-5) women’s tennis team blazes a winning trail though the Southern Conference Tournament. Today during the semifinals the women were able to take down the No 3 seed Furman, 5-0.
This was the first time the two teams have met in semifinals of the SoCon Tournament. Cougar victors, in the singles matches were: Christin Newman, Kelly Kambourelis, Caroline Newman, Samantha Maddox, Jenny Falcone and Katie Lee
“It was a great match by Furman,” CofC Director of Tennis Angelo Anastopoulo said. “They gave us everything we could handle. All of the players from both the College of Charleston and Furman deserve a lot of credit for their flexibility and the Southern Conference for giving both teams the opportunity to compete in this match. Thank you also to the Charleston Tennis Center for allowing us to get this match in before the bad weather. Overall, it was just a great performance by us. We won two matches today that we lost the last time we played Furman.”
Playing in the No. 2 player Kambourelis found herself buried after the first set, 1-6; but bounced out of trouble with back to back victory sets, 6-1 and 6-4, to finish out her win.
Kambourelis finished up third in the singles to push the Cougars to 3-0 out of six sets.
Right after Kambourelis victory was Samantha Maddox’s, also with a 2-1 victory. Maddox defeated Margaret Boyette after rallying back from a second set loss, 6-4, 5-7, 6-4.
The Finals will be a repeat of last year’s final where the Cougar will take on the No. 1 team in the SoCon, Samford. The match will be played at the Tennis Center at Patriots Point and is set to start at 10am.
