Antwaine Wiggins leads the Cougars with a career high of 25 points (Lynsey Cichon/GSO)
The College of Charleston went up against Samford on Monday and came up with a road victory. The Cougar (13-9, 5-6 SoCon) looked have a challenge ahead of them since Samford (7-14, 4-6 SoCon) was coming off win against Davidson (16-5, 10-1 SoCon). The Cougar’s extinguished this momentum with a 68-53 win over Samford.
This game was the Cougar’s first road-win with Mark Byington as interim head coach.
Senior Antwaine Wiggins was leader of the scoreboard with a new career high of 25 points. Junior Matt Sundberg came up with 14 points; his forth double-figure game of the season.
Junior Andrew Lawrence came up with 11 points, eight assists and not a single turnover. Overall the Cougars produced 17 assists which ties their second highest assist record of the season.
Byington was proud of the Cougar’s ability to assist each other in scoring opportunities and reach such high scoring marks, “I want guys to share the ball and take open shots. I was really proud seeing 17 assists and 10 turnovers tonight, especially (Andrew) Lawrence getting back-to-back games with eight assists. A lot of different guys stepped up tonight and we got production from everyone.”
Leading the Cougars in rebounds was sophomore Trent Wiedeman with 14 rebounds and six points. This aided the Cougar’s ability to out rebound Samford 43-34.
Throughout the first half the Cougars only lost the lead once and were able to gain it back before halftime, 38-28.
Over the entire game the Cougar’s had 32 three-point attempts. Byington was also pleased with the guys ability to sink the shots over the Samford zone defense.
“It’s one of those things, believe it or not, when you look at Samford’s team, you can’t go inside against them. They pack it in and it’s a match-up zone. There are very few post catches you can get. As long as we are taking good shots, I’m good.”
Wiggins was greatly pleased with the game and looks forward to the game against Elon stating, “It feels really good. Once you get the win, it’s a whole new feeling. Everyone showed a lot of passion and played really hard tonight. It’s been tough. It was shock to all of us (when Coach Cremins took a medical leave of absence). We trust Coach B (Byington) as a coach. He has been here for six years with Coach Cremins. We are behind him 100 percent and we know the season isn’t over. I’m so excited and Thursday can’t come fast enough (to play Elon).”
Cougars play again Feb 2 at 7.p.m. against Elon in the Alumni Gym.
